How to fix an Apple iPhone 6 that's not charging [Troubleshooting]

There are several factors that need to be considered when troubleshooting an iPhone 6 that's not charging and believe me, it's not just about the hardware or accessories. There's one thing most iPhone owners overlook whenever their devices refuse to charge.

Read on as I will guide you through in troubleshooting your iPhone 6 that won't charge.

Step-by-step Troubleshooting Guide

The procedure I use in this post is the same as the procedure we, real life technicians, follow in case a customer walks in the shop having the same problem. And while we want your problem to be fixed, we usually don't suggest steps that could potentially damage the phone especially that we can't inspect your device physically.

Step 1: Verify it's not a system crash

Firmware plays a very important role in the charging process. In fact, if the system crashes, your iPhone 6 won't charge at all. So, the first thing you should do is make sure your phone didn't just freeze or became unresponsive.

To do this, just press and hold the Power key and the Home button together for 30 seconds or until the Apple logo appears. After 30 seconds and the logo didn't appear, then proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Make sure the lightning cable isn't broken

The USB cable is the only thing that bridges the power adapter and your iPhone 6. If there's a break somewhere, then electric current can't reach your device.

Physically inspect the USB cable for breaks and all that. If there are signs of fraying or wear, then it may be time to buy a new cable or if your device is still under warranty, Apple may replace it for free.

If there are no signs of damage, then try plugging the cable to your computer or laptop. If it so happened that your iPhone 6 still has power, it should be detected by your computer or, at least, the machine will tell you something is plugged in. Even if the iPhone 6 is turned off, it would still charge but that is if the cable is fine.

Step 3: Check the power adapter

If your iPhone charged or even got detected by your computer, then the lighting cable isn't damaged. Plugging it to the power adapter should charge your device, if not, then that's where the problem lies.

To further verify this, borrow a charger from a friend if possible as there is still a chance it's not the power adapter that's damaged. Buying a new one immediately would be impractical especially if you haven't verified what the real problem is.

Step 4: Check the charging port of your iPhone 6

Assuming that your phone didn't charge even with a different charger and/or cable, then it's time you checked the charging port.

All it takes is a small lint to block one pin in the port to prevent the phone from charging. So, here's what you're going to do…
  1. Take a flashlight.
  2. Inspect the port for debris or lint that may be blocking the lightning cable from conducting electricity.
  3. To be sure there's nothing in there, clean the port with a toothbrush. Just be gentle in brushing as the pins can easily be bent.
  4. Also, make sure there are no bent pins.

Step 5: Have an appointment with an Apple technician

You did your part and the problem still persists. It's time you had someone to take a look at your device. If it can't be fixed by a tech and there's no liquid damage of some sort, then the device will be replaced.

I really wish this simple guide helped you one way or another because I know the hassle of going to a tech and explaining what happened to your phone not to mention the wait. I'd love to hear from you and your experiences troubleshooting your device. You may leave a comment below or email us at sebertech@gmail.com and we'll be happy to help you.

Thanks for reading and I wish you all the best.
